The Wisconsin football staff has landed an official visit from a coveted defensive back recruit, but the recruit comes with a separate commitment.
Zay Gentry, a three-star cornerback in the 2025 recruiting class, is currently a hard commitment at SMU. However, Gentry announced a list of official visits he will be taking, and included the Badgers in the list. Gentry announced his commitment ten days ago to the Mustangs, but could be keeping his options open due to the official visits scheduled.
Wisconsin Football Secures Official Visit From Three-Star Cornerback Say Gentry
The Wisconsin football staff is scheduled to host three-star Southern Methodist commitment Zay Gentry in a handful of weeks. Gentry will visit Wisconsin on May 31st, which could prove to be a pivotal visit given the relationship and long standing interest the Badgers staff has had in Gentry.
The Texas native announced his verbal commitment to SMU just ten days ago, but has since scheduled two official visits. The recruit will visit Madison to end the month of May to meet with the Wisconsin football staff before returning to Texas to meet with Baylor. Gentry does not have an official visit with SMU set-up just yet, but likely will do so since he does not have a recorded visit with the school.
Wisconsin Badgers Football Aims to Flip Gentry During Upcoming Official Visit
The Wisconsin football staff and Zay Gentry have quite some history, as the Badgers have been in-contact with Gentry for nearly a year. Wisconsin football has worked very hard to develop a relationship with Gentry, which is why they are not willing to end their recruitment despite his commitment status. Gentry is a speedy, exceptional coverage cornerback, and Wisconsin is not yet ready to give up on the possibility of landing the recruit.
Gentry currently holds 32 scholarship offers, and has been on quite the visit spree since he was first contacted by Wisconsin. At this point in time, it seems as though the interest Gentry has in Wisconsin has cooled off, a successful official visit could surely bring the Badgers back into the equation.
For the Badgers Staff, Building the Secondary is a Top Order of Business
So far through the 2025 recruiting cycle, Wisconsin football has made it clear that they are aiming to improve both the defensive line and their secondary. The Badgers currently hold four total defensive back commitments in their class, including one hybrid athlete that will likely play safety for Wisconsin.
The Badgers are aiming to add plenty of depth to the secondary, and just that could happen as Wisconsin currently has three major official visitors in June. The Wisconsin football staff will have Gentry, Jayden Shipps, and CJ Bell on campus, all of whom are accomplished cornerbacks.
