After plenty of consideration, the Wisconsin football staff has missed out on the top in-state recruit for the 2025 class.
Owen Strebig, a four-star offensive tackle from Waukesha, recently announced his commitment to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Strebig had been heavily linked to both the Wisconsin football program and Notre Dame the past few months, and now has officially become a part of the Fighting Irish program. The Badgers will now have to pivot after losing one of their top recruiting targets.
Wisconsin Football Misses on Top In-State Recruit Owen Strebig Following Notre Dame Push
Since the start of his recruitment, the talk about offensive tackle Owen Strebig has always been about whether or not the recruit will stay in Wisconsin. Strebig, a 6-foot-8-inch tower on the offensive line, has long been considered the star of the 2025 recruiting class in the state of Wisconsin. With nearly 30 major scholarship offers however, it always seemed like a far-fetched dream to have Strebig play for the Wisconsin football program.
In the end, it was Notre Dame who was able to secure the commitment from the talented player after heavily recruiting the individual. To be fair, while Wisconsin football would have loved Strebig, they also understood he would likely leave the state for his collegiate career. Towards the end of his recruitment it began to seem much more like a long-shot for Wisconsin to land the recruit.
Can the Wisconsin Football Staff Make-Up for In-State Misses?
Despite not being able to reel in the top talent in-state the past two years, Wisconsin football has still had plenty of recruiting success within their own state. Currently in the 2025 recruiting class, the Badgers have commitments from two top-ten in-state recruits while still awaiting decisions from more. Along with the solid in-state recruits landed, Wisconsin football has also had plenty of success recruiting outside of their state, which has made-up for some of the key misses.
Wisconsin Badgers Football Staff Pivots, Eyes Top Connecticut Lineman
While to some it is a major miss for Wisconsin, the staff had a pretty good idea Owen Strebig would land elsewhere months ago. However, that does not mean the staff should not have done their due diligence and still visited the recruit despite his standing with the program.
Despite the last-chance efforts coming up short, Wisconsin football already pivoted their attention elsewhere within the 2025 recruiting class. The top-ranked Connecticut lineman Matty Augustine has been a major recruiting target for Wisconsin football as of late, and could potentially land with the program in the future. Wisconsin is still working to get Augustine on-campus in the coming months, which could be a major move.
