The Wisconsin basketball staff has been eager to land a replacement for their longtime leader Tyler Wahl.
One of the premier targets for the Wisconsin staff has been UIC transfer wing Toby Okani, who is no stranger to the transfer portal. The Badgers are keen on bringing in a player who can replicate both the size and style of play that Wahl has provided. Okani is a dynamic playmaker who can offer plenty of athleticism to Wisconsin, which is perhaps why he has been tabbed as the replacement for Wahl.
Wisconsin Basketball Staff Eyeing Transfer Guard/Forward Toby Okani
The Wisconsin basketball staff has reached out to a talented transfer portal entry. Toby Okani is a 6-foot-8-inch, 210-pound guard/forward, who most recently played for UIC the past two seasons. Okani originally committed to Duquesne out of High School, but later transferred after two seasons due to a lack of playing time.
Now, after a 12-21 season with UIC, Okani has again entered the transfer portal as he looks to spend his final year of eligibility elsewhere. This past season, Okani averaged 11.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while adding two blocks and 1.5 steals. The lengthy wing had by far his best overall season on both sides of the ball the year with UIC.
The knock on Okani has been his shooting percentage and shot intelligence over his career. The guard shot 39.4% this past season and 57.1% from the free-throw line as he struggled to find his stride.
Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Could Use Another Athletic Playmaker Alongside AJ Storr
If there is one thing that Wisconsin basketball truly loves during this search for a Wahl replacement, it has been athleticism. Okani is a big, athletic guard for his size and it can be rather difficult to guard him at times given his reach. With the possibility of both AJ Storr and Okani on the court together, Wisconsin basketball could display a high-flying offense.
The potential of landing Okani seems rather low, however, given both his struggles shooting the ball this season and the amount of offers coming his way. Wisconsin basketball would need to battle to land Okani, and with March going on, it is likely that will not happen.
Can the Wisconsin Basketball Staff Easily Replace Wahl, or Will It Become a Struggle?
For the Wisconsin basketball staff, trying to replace Wahl could become a great issue than they originally thought. The Badgers have been very active in the transfer portal thus far, considering the Conference Tournaments have brought on a mass exodus of players from plenty of programs.
The Badgers have been working hard to find someone who can takeover for their veteran forward who has led the team during his career. While Wisconsin basketball seems eager to find someone to fill his role, it could be something that will prove to be difficult for the Badgers. Being able to match both skill and success on the court is one thing, but the presence Wahl provided in the locker room will go unmatched.
