Wisconsin Badgers: Luke Fickell Makes Emphatic Statement About His Player Being Disqualified

A 38-17 win over the Buffalo Bulls was the official start to the 2023 season for the Wisconsin Badgers and it marked the beginning of the Luke Fickell era.  Although the team won by a significant margin, there was still a lot of room for improvement. Many fans were excited to see the “air raid” offense that offensive coordinator Phil Longo is implementing. However, the offense struggled mightily through the air at times.

Another area of improvement came from the defensive side. Although they held Buffalo to 17 points, it was not their usual dominant performance.  One defensive player was even ejected.  Luke Fickell spoke to that following their win.

Luke Fickell Comments On Jordan Turner Being Disqualified During The Wisconsin Badgers’ Win Over The Buffalo Bulls

For the first half of the next game against South Dakota, the University of Wisconsin football team will be a little short in its linebacker corps.

A review of Jordan Turner’s hit on Buffalo receiver Boobie Curry in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s season opener at Camp Randall Stadium resulted in him being ejected for targeting after he was found guilty of targeting.

Due to the fact that it happened in the second half of the game, the ejection also comes with a suspension for the first half of the following game. Turner is eligible to return in the second half of the Washington State game on Sept. 9.

Coach Luke Fickell expressed his thoughts on the ejection of Wisconsin linebacker Jordan Turner after the Badgers’ 38-17 win over Buffalo Saturday.

According to Fickell, Turner did not deserve to be ejected, but he also thinks no player should be thrown out in a game, depending on the circumstances.

“I’ll say this every time, I do not believe we should throw kids out of games,” Fickell said in his postgame press conference. “If it’s a blatant shot where we’ve gotta make a point…maybe.”

Turner emerged as a defensive leader during the past season, recording 68 tackles, five tackles for loss, and two sacks. He has a good nose for the ball and is a solid 1-2 punch with Maema Njongmeta, the other stating linebacker.

It is worth noting that Turner had 8 total tackles prior to the ejection and was a force on defense. Turner’s departure to the locker room was certainly a big loss for the Badgers.

Tatum Grass and Jake Chaney are the backup linebackers listed on the Badgers depth chart.
