The Green Bay Packers were urged to shore up one position on the roster this week after their dominating win over the Chicago Bears in their season opener. The Packers aren’t entirely healthy in the secondary, especially at cornerback.
The Packers had to pace Eric Stokes on the PUP list to start the season. That means he’s out for at least the next three games. However, there’s no guarantee he’ll be back by their fifth game, and he could miss much more time this season.
The Green Bay Packers are urged to sign William Jackson III
The Bleacher Report staff named potential free-agent signings for each team after Week 1. They named former first-round cornerback William Jackson III as an intriguing option for the Packers:
With Eric Stokes starting the season on the PUP list, the Packers could use some depth at cornerback behind Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas. While Jackson’s injured-riddled tenure in Washington and Pittsburgh over the last two seasons was disappointing, he would still bring starting experience and talent to Green Bay’s secondary. The former Bengal did have 41 pass breakups in 59 games with Cincinnati.
Jackson was taken 24th overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2016 NFL Draft. He played in Cincinnati through the 2020 season and has spent time with Washington and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jackson has started in 64 games and has five interceptions and 51 passes defensed in his career. He earned a 49.6 overall grade from Pro Football Focus last season. Jackson’s highest season grade came in 2017 when he earned a 90.2 overall grade from PFF.
Jackson is nowhere near the same player he was early in his career. However, he could add quality depth until Stokes is ready to return this season. Jackson would be a good reliever if Jaire Alexander of Rasul Douglas has to leave a game with an injury.
