The Packers are continuing to figure out which receivers are going to be impactful options for quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the offense this season. The team added rookies Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs in April’s NFL Draft. They also signed free agent Sammy Watkins earlier this offseason. Veterans Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb were brought back for another year too. The offense has a very nice balance of youth and experience. However, the team still has roughly $17M in cap space. If they want to add another piece that can take their offense to a whole new level, a player like Will Fuller could be a great addition.
First off, it is important to note that Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur coached Fuller at Notre Dame in 2014. Fuller was a star receiver for the Irish from 2013 to 2015. LaFleur was an offensive assistant at Notre Dame during the Fuller’s sophomore season. So, there is some familiarity here. Fuller is one of the premiere deap threats in the NFL. Despite having an injury history (never played a full NFL season), he has had a yards-per-reception mark of over 15 in three of his six career seasons. He has an average yards-per-touch mark of 14.5 too. He is a big-play threat that can stretch the field with his elite speed (4.32 40-yard dash time).
After a rough season in Miami after suffering a leg injury as well as serving a PED suspension, Fuller is looking for a new landing spot. The Packers have the cap space, the coach, and the quarterback. His familiarity with LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers being arguably the best quarterback of all-time could help him have a career year. He would bring experience and speed to this offense. Rodgers had an amazing connection with franchise legend Jordy Nelson for a decade. They were elite when it came to deep routes and big-play opportunities. Fuller has the game-breaking speed to take the top off of any defense. At worst, he could be a decoy. If Green Bay brought Fuller in on a one-year deal, it would be a win-win for both sides. Fuller would join a Super Bowl-contending team that is in search of more talented pass-catchers.
