This off-season, there have been some big name players to be designated for assignment. Unfortunately, they are being DFA’d because they have not lived up to big contracts that they signed. Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas are two examples. Tommy La Stella can now be added to that list.
La Stella signed a three year deal with the Giants prior to the start of the 2021 season. His deal was backloaded and his 2023 salary is $11.5MM. As mentioned, he has not lived up to his contract and the Giants elected to DFA him.
It seems unlikely that the Giants will be able to find a trade partner for La Stella over the next week. This means that he likely will hit the free agent market and can be signed for the league minimum. This is what has happened with Hosmer and Moustakas.
Should the Brewers look to target Tommy La Stella?
La Stella has had a very up and down career. He has posted a wRC+ greater than 100 in four seasons, but under in five. At his best, La Stella shows flashes of being a good offensive player but they have been few and far in between.
Injuries have also limited La Stella significantly. He’s played more than 100 games in a season just once. He also is no longer a versatile defender and spent most of his time at designated hitter last season.
Given the downward trajectory of La Stella and his injury history, the Brewers should turn their attention elsewhere. Additionally, they have Brice Turang, Abraham Toro, Mike Brosseau, and Luis Urias who play similar positions and are better defensively.
