San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy admits facing the Green Bay Packers defense on Saturday could be a huge challenge for him and the rest of the team.
While Green Bay had a below average total defense during the 2023 regular season, that wasn’t the case in the Wild Card round when they destroyed the Dallas Cowboys to book their tickets to the divisional round. Not only did the Packers sack Dak Prescott four times and pick him off twice, but the Dallas offense managed only 16 points through three quarters while Jordan Love and Co. scored 41 during that span.
Purdy gave credit to the massive leap that the Packers’ defense had made, adding that he expects Green Bay to come out as motivated defensively or even more when they meet.
“Yeah, I think there were just some really good plays made by the DBs. Jaire Alexander, his ball instincts on his one interception. Then number 26 [Darnell] Savage [Jr.] coming down and making a good read on Dak and jumping a slant,” Purdy said when asked what was different about Green Bay’s defense against Dallas, via 49ers WebZone.
“I don’t want to say anything on their behalf, but it looks like it’s playoff football. They’re aggressive in what they’re doing and when they see an opportunity they’re willing to be aggressive and take it. Those are all things that I think we have to take into account. For myself, obviously with the ball in my hands every play. They’re guys that can make plays. I have to understand that. So it’s going to be a really good challenge.”
The Green Bay Packers’ defense definitely deserves a ton of credit. As Brock Purdy himself said, they made plenty of game-altering plays that just made life easier for the offense.
Sure enough, the San Francisco 49ers have every reason to be wary. The Packers just slowed down a Top 5 offense, and so they will need to be perfect on offense if they don’t want to suffer the same fate as the Dallas Cowboys.
San Francisco 49ers’ Offense Could Be a Problem for the Green Bay Packers
As much as the need for the San Francisco 49ers to be consistent offensively in the divisional round, the same can be said for the Green Bay Packers’ defense.
The Packers cannot compare the 49ers to the Cowboys. San Francisco recorded the second-best total offense in 2023, and with two MVP candidates in Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey, they have the ultimate pick-your-poison dup that could make life hard for any offense.
With that said, the Packers cannot afford to make any errors defensively if they want to pull off another upset. If there is one thing going in favor of Green Bay, however, it’s the fact that they are brimming with confidence right now after winning four straight games.
