The Philadelphia Phillies and the Milwaukee Brewers were eliminated by the New York Mets in the 2024 MLB postseason. The Mets are currently facing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. While those two teams are trying to compete for a spot in the World Series, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee will have to make crucial decisions this offseason.
It will be very interesting to see what the Phillies and the Brewers decide to do this offseason. Philadelphia won the NL East this season and Milwaukee won the NL Central this season.
Philadelphia Phillies Expected To Pursue Milwaukee Brewers Closer Devin Williams This Offseason Admist Bullpen Struggles
The Phillies bullpen toward the end of the season was awful and it was not any better in the National League Divisional Series against the New York Mets. Philadelphia will look to improve its bullpen this offseason. One of the names to watch for is Devin Williams, according to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report. Miller said:
“Much like last winter when the Minnesota Twins exercised their $10.5M club option on Jorge Polanco in November only to trade him away in January, look for the Brew Crew to “keep” Williams before trading him—possibly to the Phillies, who have both Carlos Estévez and Jeff Hoffman hitting free agency and have been in a near-permanent state of trying to find a reliable closer.”
It is very possible that the Phillies will not bring back Estevez and Hoffman this offseason. Devin Williams will have one more year remaining on his contract before becoming a free agent after the 2025 season. The Milwaukee Brewers could very well hang onto him.
General Manager Matt Arnold Has His Back
In Game 3 of the National League Wild Card round against the New York Mets, Milwaukee had a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning until Devin Williams gave up a three-run homer to Pete Alonso. The Mets won that game 4-2 and it sent the Brewers packing for the 2024 season.
During a press conference last week, general manager Matt Arnold has full belief in Devin Williams as the team’s closer for next season. If they were to trade him to the Phillies or another team this offseason, it would be interesting to see who would take over as the team’s closer during the 2025 MLB season.
