The Milwaukee Brewers have trimmed their magic number down to two after they scored a 6-2 win at home over the Philadelphia Phillies in a series opener Monday night. The Brewers, who have won three of their last four games, received a big boost from their bullpen, which also got a surprise, with Colin Rea helping the team close out the contest.
Rea earned his first career save in the big leagues when he tossed for 2.2 innings in relief in the Phillies game. He allowed zero earned runs and only three hits through 29 pitches to shut the door on Philadelphia. In the process, Rea aided the Brewers into establishing a new franchise record.
Via the Associated Press (h/t ESPN):
Rea became the 12th Brewers pitcher to get a save this season, setting a franchise record. The only team to have more was the 2021 Tampa Bay Rays with 14.
Colin Rea to the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen’s rescue
Thanks to Rea’s performance, Aaron Civale managed to get his fifth win of the season. Civale started for the Brewers against the Phillies and allowed just an earned run on seven hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work on the mound.
Rea was called on to help the bullpen after the Brewers had five relievers working in a previous game against the Arizona Diamondbacks which ended in an 11-10 Milwaukee loss in extra innings.
“He goes, ‘Absolutely,’” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said about asking Rea to come out of the bullpen for the Phillies game. “That’s the type of people that you’re looking for to build a team when you’re in a small market and had all the adversity we’ve had.”
