When the Green Bay Packers signed Sammy Watkins earlier this year, many wondered if he would be able to stay healthy enough to play. Those questions will be fueled even more now. Today, the first day of Packers training camp, the team put Watkins on the non-Football injury list. Tom Pelissero broke the news on Twitter.

This is certainly not great news for Watkins. He has very little keeping him from being released before the season starts. As I detailed here, the Green Bay Packers only guaranteed $350,000 of Watkins’ $1.85 million contract. If he cannot get healthy even for training camp, the Packers might as well go with Samori Toure, Malik Taylor, or Juwann Winfree.
Young Wide Receivers Have a Big Opportunity Now
Going into training camp, many analysts predicted that Sammy Watkins would make the 53-man roster. Rightfully so, considering the potential that he has to be a lethal weapon in Matt LaFleur’s offense. So too, Christian Watson, the Packers’ second round draft pick, is almost a guaranteed lock for the 53-man roster. However, both players are starting training camp unable to play. Watson was placed on the PUP list over the weekend.
While Watson’s injury is not expected to keep him out long, his absence for the beginning of training camp is going to provide other young wide receivers with more reps. These receivers include Romeo Doubs, Toure, Amari Rodgers, Winfree, and Taylor.
It is not clear at this time what kind of injury Watkins is dealing with. Hopefully it is not serious and he will be on the field sooner rather than later. If he is going to be out for while, later may never come for him as a member of the Green Bay Packers
