Did you know Detmer won the Heisman Trophy?
Ty Detmer was drafted by the Packers in the 9th round of the 1992 NFL Draft. He was Brett Favre’s Legendary back-up, appearing in only seven games over four seasons. Detmer was in the news recently helping confirm that Brett Favre had no idea what a nickel defense was. He is alive and well.
The former college standout won the Heisman trophy in 1990 while playing quarterback for BYU. That accomplishment alone keeps him in many special circles, traveling around when needed for speaking engagements and such. His seminal game was against Miami. In that game he threw for 406 yards and 3 touchdowns. Check out some highlights here.
Detmer stays active in congratulating Heisman Trophy winners. Here is a tweet he sent in support of Cincinnati Quarterback Joe Burrow.
Looking forward to welcoming in a new winner tonight! https://t.co/UA2XjueFpB

Detmer’s NFL Career
While Ty Detmer never played for Cincinnati, he did have a very active professional playing career, playing for a number of teams. Detmer played for the Packers, Browns, Eagles, Lions and 49er’s. He also earned good money while playing football. With the Browns he signed a 7yr, $14 million dollar contract in 1999. He was not able to “play out” that contract. In 2001, he earned $700,000 while playing for Detroit. As a point of comparison the NFL league minimum today is $705,000.
In 14 total seasons in the NFL, Detmer played in 54 games (with 25 starts), totaling 6,351 yards passing with 34 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. “Mr. BYU” did not officially retire from football at the time of his release from Atlanta, but he has not played since then.
Today, Ty Detmer is actively coaching. He is the head football coach (per his Twitter https://twitter.com/TyDetmer14) at ALA-Queen Creek.
