General Manager Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers have the opportunity to toss all of their chips into the middle of the table to land a generational talent to anchor the defense, in former NFL Defensive Player of The Year Myles Garrett.
Garrett formally requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns on Monday, and the Packers have both the need and draft capital to be a big player in a sweepstakes that will likely have several teams bidding for his services.
After all, Garrett has produced at least 14 sacks the past four seasons, and has 102 sacks through the first eight seasons of his career. That kind of difference-making disruption doesn’t come along very often.
Could the Packers Pull Off a Myles Garrett Trade?
Bleacher Report NFL Analyst Alex Kay put together a list of potential Garrett trade packages for several teams across the league.
Here’s a proposal Kay whipped up for a potential Browns-Packers Garrett blockbuster:
Cleveland Browns receive: 2025 first-round pick (No. 23 overall), 2025 second-round pick (No. 54), 2025 third-round pick (No. 87)
Green Bay Packers receive: Edge Myles Garrett
“Garrett would make Green Bay’s defense a force to be reckoned with in 2025 and beyond,” Kay writes for B/R. “The Packers already finished eighth in sacks (45) this past season, sixth in scoring defense and fifth in total defense. Adding Garrett—who’s had double-digit sacks in each of the past seven years—would push this unit into the upper echelon, especially if up-and-comers like Kingsley Enagbare and Devonte Wyatt continue their impressive trajectories.
“While the Packers might have to mortgage their future to facilitate this trade, it’s rare for a player of Garrett’s caliber to become available. Green Bay would be foolish not to try to capitalize on the situation.”
It’s worth debating if trading three draft picks would be mortgaging the future, for a roster that is among the youngest in the league and is led by an ascending quarterback that was largely held up by its defense down the stretch last season.
Garrett is the type of player who can transform the defense and elevate the Packers into the realm of legitimate Super Bowl contenders in a way that even hitting on three early-round picks might not be able to do.
