The Green Bay Packers have done a really nice job on following through on the commitment the organization made to surrounding quarterback Jordan Love with young receivers who can develop alongside him.
Jayden Reed is a speed merchant after the catch. When healthy, Romeo Doubs is a matchup nightmare. Dontayvion Wicks and Christian Watson are both sure-handed and reliable weapons for Love in the passing game.
However, even Jacobs saw the limitation of an offense that doesn’t have a true top of the depth chart talent at wide receiver, in an era where the position has never made a bigger impact on a franchise’s Super Bowl chances.
“We’ve got a really young group of receivers,” Jacobs told 97.3 The Game on Wednesday. “All can be really, really, really special, but I think personally we need a guy that’s proven to be a No. 1 already, somebody that we know is going to be a little bit more consistent.”
The uncomfortable truth for the Packers is that if the offense is going to take the next step, and if Love is going to bounce back from a bit of a regression in 2024, Green Bay needs to aggressively add a dynamic and game-changing wide receiver. Jacobs is right.
A.J. Brown might be the most important player on the Eagles’ roster, and has been instrumental in Philadelphia making two Super Bowl appearances in three seasons.
Meanwhile, the Packers need look no further than the Minnesota Vikings to see the value Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison have on a team’s chances of winning and winning big.
The Cincinnati Bengals have been most successful with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins both on the field and healthy, including a Super Bowl berth back in 2021.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst vowed earlier this offseason to do what’s necessary to transform Green Bay into a Super Bowl contender and just might have the opportunity to add the kind of player who can do exactly that.
The Los Angeles Rams are shopping Cooper Kupp, and if the Packers can convince the Rams to move him within the NFC, he’s easily the highest upside option for Green Bay to add its difference-making talent at receiver.
Kupp is an outstanding blocker in the running game, which would benefit Jacobs, in addition to catching 67 passes for 710 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games last season.
Adding Kupp is the kind of move that would significantly elevate Matt LaFleur’s offense while creating opportunities for the other young receivers on the roster to thrive because of the attention opposing secondaries must pay Kupp.
Few coaches are better equipped to Maximize Cupp than LaFleur, who was once his offensive coordinator on Sean McVay’s Rams staff.
If the Packers are serious about contending in 2025, and building an offense that has the potential to be one of the more explosive in the league, trading for Kupp should be a top organizational priority for Gutekunst and Green Bay.
