When the Green Bay Packers made the decision to trade four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, it kicked off a great deal of bad press and negativity on sports talk shows and social media. Needless to say, it was not a popular decision. While many Packers fans were supportive of their team and Jordan Love, many others were not.
The debate over which quarterback, Rodgers or Love, gave the Packers the best chance to win in 2023 was a heated one for months. It was not until Love went on an absolute tear in the second half of last season that many of the doubters and Rodgers supporters realized that the Packers had made the right decision. Of course, long before that point, the future Pro Football Hall of Famer had already been lost for the season due to a torn Achilles.
The Aftermath of the Aaron Rodgers Trade Was Ugly for the Green Bay Packers
No two people were criticized more in the wake of the Aaron Rodgers trade than Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and Jordan Love. Pat McAfee, who is a close friend of Rodgers, went so far as to say that Jets general manager Joe Douglas is a genius and that he was not so sure Gutekunst was a smart person in general.
He recently recanted these comments in light of what has been happening in New York over the last several months.
Popular sports talk show host Colin Cowherd, who had hyped up Love prior to the 2020 NFL Draft, completely turned on him following the trade. At one point, he encouraged Love to just give up his career and retire following a preseason game.
Love was 7/10 for 46 yards and a touchdown in that game.
It did not help that the Packers got off to a slow start in 2023 either. While Rodgers was out for the year, Love and the Packers were still struggling. It took a monster 6-2 run over their final eight games for them to get into the postseason, but that run also proved a lot of doubters wrong.
Green Bay Packers Fans Troll the Jets and Aaron Rodgers Over Latest Report
For all the hype and celebration that occurred when Rodgers was traded to the Jets, New York has been sorely disappointed in each of the past two years. Not only did their new franchise quarterback miss virtually all of 2023, he is having the worst year of his career now in 2024.
Not only that, Rodgers and the Jets are headed for a bitter divorce, as reported by Dianna Russini of The Athletic.
And Packers fans are just waiting to see how it all unfolds:

The short-sightedness Davante Adams has shown in picking new teams has been about as bad as it gets https://t.co/Sl5yvrWAoh

Arrive. Get injured. Use your pull to make the worst coaching/player acquisitions in the league. Fail. Get people fired. Leave. The Aaron Rodgers way https://t.co/AcI4KAFmRp

This has to be the end of his career. No other way to put it. No team, except the Green Bay Packers, should entertain bringing him into their facility and only the Packers should sign him to a 1 day contract to retire as a Green Bay Packer. That’s it https://t.co/2Pec5Ea5dF

One thing is certain: virtually no one saw Rodgers’ career going the way it did when the trade first happened. It will indeed be interesting to see what the offseason brings in terms of roster changes in New York.
