Oakland Athletics second baseman Jace Peterson’s historic night at the plate.
Against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night Jace Peterson went 5-5 with two home runs and five runs batted in. His two long balls came in his final two at-bats in the eighth and ninth innings as the Athletics routed the Pirates by a score of 11-2.
With this stat line Jace Peterson became just the second Oakland Athletics second baseman to go 5-5 with two home runs. He joined Hall of Famer Nap Lajoie as the only other in franchise history to accomplish this. The last A’s player (not a second baseman) to go 5-for-5 with two home runs was Eric Chavez in 2005.
In regards to 5-5 nights, Jace Peterson became the first A’s player do it since Hideki Matsui in 2011 and the first Oakland second baseman to do it since Mark Ellis on Aug. 10, 2009.
To make things sweeter Peterson reached a career milestone during this game as he collected his 500th career hit. Following the game he was very appreciative of his accomplishment.
To get the 500th career hit, I’m very thankful. It’s kind of crazy how baseball works. Just happy it happened and happy we won.
