The New York Jets released a backup for Aaron Rodgers before the 53-man roster deadline Tuesday afternoon. They signed the former Green Bay Packers quarterback to the practice squad Wednesday.

Boyle was brought into the Jets this spring as the Jets traded for Rodgers. Boyle has familiarity with Rodgers and Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett from their time together in Green Bay. He wasn’t expected to compete for the QB1 or QB2 job, as Rodgers is the Jets’ obvious starter, and Zach Wilson is a capable backup.
Boyle can help Rodgers and Wilson in the film room and, if active for the gameday roster, could be a good pair of eyes on the sideline.
