The Green Bay Packers first preseason game is just around the corner. The Packers are one of the youngest teams in the NFL and seem content with riding the struggles that come with a young squad. However, no team is going to be hurt by adding veterans to the locker room. The Packers have let many veteran players walk in free agency this offseason, but there are still plenty of experienced free agents available that can help the Green Bay Packers should they look to add to the team.
Defensive free agents to help the Green Bay Packers
If the team is going to add veteran free agents it is likely going to be on the offensive end. The defense has veteran leadership even though it is on the younger side. Preston Smith and De’Vondre Campbell are the oldest players on defense and are both 30 years old. The Green Bay Packers would not be looking for starters in the remaining free-agent crop but could benefit from veteran depth.
- – EDGE Jadeveon Clowney
- – S John Johnson
- – S Logan Ryan
- – EDGE Kyle Van Noy
The Packers could look to add an EDGE rusher before the season if they are not pleased with what they see from Kingsley Enagbare and Justin Hollins. They drafted Lukas Van Ness, but anticipate him rushing from multiple positions like Za’Darius Smith did when he was with the team. Clowney and Van Noy are big names but have seen a production drop recently. As the season gets closer their cost of signing will likely decrease as well. Additionally, the Packers do not know exactly when Rashan Gary will return. A pass rusher may not be out of the question.
The safety position might be the weakest position group on the roster. Similar to Clowney and Van Noy, John Johnson and Logan Ryan have seen production drop. They may not be big-impact signings, but they provide depth and veteran leadership in a young room. The Packers signed Jonathan Owens, but he is still trying to cement a role on the team.
Offensive free agents to help the Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers offense is a very young group, and they have loaded up on depth through the draft. They are spending the least money of any NFL team on their wide receiver group since most of their players are on rookie deals. The offensive line has a good mix of veteran and young talent. The team seems content with being a young offense, but if the Packers are going to add a free agent it will likely be a pass catcher.
- – WR Jarvis Landry
- – TE O.J. Howard
- – WR Julio Jones
There are not many veteran pass catchers remaining on the market. The Packers seem like they are completely fine having a young group of wideouts and tight ends. They have two rookie tight ends and drafted three rookie wide receivers. They may have to deal with the growing pains of a young group and a young quarterback. However, a player like Jarvis Landry could be a good leader for a young room and could be a good presence for Jordan Love.
