NFL: Former Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby has found himself without a job after the team made the decision not to re-sign him. Instead, the Packers drafted Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. While Carlson has been inconsistent throughout Green Bay’s training camp and preseason games, Matt LaFleur, Brian Gutekunst, and Rich Bisaccia have maintained they plan to be patient with him as he develops and improves.
Crosby, for his part, is not just sitting around waiting for the phone to ring. He recently posted a video of himself drilling a long field goal and then told NFL teams that he is not hard to find. Clearly, he still wants to play this season.

Late Friday night, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport posted on X (formerly Twitter) that both the San Francisco 49ers’ kickers, Zane Gonzales and Jake Moody, are dealing with leg injuries:

Moody was the first kicker taken in the 2023 NFL Draft, with the 49ers using their third round pick on him. Zane Gonzales has been in camp for insurance and to provide competition for the rookie.
Like the Packers, San Francisco made the decision to move on from their aging kicker, Robbie Gould, in favor of a younger specialist. And like Crosby, Gould remains un-signed.
However, Crosby was slightly better than Gould last season, making 86.2% of his field goal attempts compared to 84.4% for Gould.
There is the possibility that San Francisco does not sign a veteran kicker and hopes that one of their current kickers are healthy by Week One. That being said, Week One is two weeks away.
If the 49ers do opt to sign a veteran kicker this close to the season, Gould would likely be their primary target due to his history with the team. However, Crosby is also on the market and could be an attractive option as well. As mentioned, he was slightly more accurate last year while playing on an injured knee.
Now that he is healthy, he could be a steal for any team that finds themselves needing a kicker.
