There are a plethora of former Green Bay Packers players that followed future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. Of course, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was the first with Packers connections to head to New York. Shortly after, wide receiver Allen Lazard signed a four-year $44 million deal with the Jets, even before the Rodgers trade was finalized.
Since the trade, Billy Turner, Randall Cobb, Malik Taylor, Tim Boyle, and Adam Pankey also all signed with New York. Adrian Amos became the final former Packers player to join New York, agreeing to a one year deal with them in June.
The Jets, of course, have already started training camp. After one of their practices open to the public, Amos was asked about reuniting with Rodgers in New York. Interestingly. it seems as if Rodgers may have been recruiting Amos even before he signed.
Former Green Bay Packers Safety Adrian Amos on Reuniting with Aaron Rodgers on the New York Jets: “It Just Worked Out That Way”
When addressing the media, Amos was asked about his offseason. After spending eight years in the NFC North with the Bears and Packers, he did not get a ton of interest on the free agent market right away. It was quite the process for Amos, who is playing closer to home:
“Throughout the offseason, it was just trying to find the best fit for me. Going into Year 9, you want to find a place that I can thrive and continue my career. It’s close to home since I’m from Baltimore and that’s a quick drive up the road.
Great defense, Aaron (Rodgers) here, I talked to him a few times about the place and came in here for a visit. The coaches seem great, the atmosphere seems great, and it just worked out that way.”
It is not surprising the Rodgers was in contact with Amos prior to his signing. The future Hall of Famer has also been in contact with his heir, Jordan Love, who revealed earlier this offseason that the two still communicate.
Like Rodgers, Amos had a down year in 2022 and is looking to bounce back with his new team. The Jets signed Amos following projected starter Chuck Clark’s torn ACL during OTA’s. It is possible that Amos may step in as the starter on Day One, but has not been practicing with the first team all the time:
“Anywhere I go, I think I’m the guy Day 1. Since I’ve been in the league, I’ve been the guy Day 1. Even when I was a fifth-rounder, I came in and had to earn a spot.
That’s just my mentality, but right now it’s the first time I’ve seen all the plays and what everything was when I got here a couple of days ago. The first time I walked through anything. It’s very understandable for me to not be with the ones all the time, right away.”
Given Amos’ ability to stay healthy and his high football IQ, it will not be a surprise when he takes over a starting spot for the Jets.
Perhaps he and Rodgers will be named team captains again, too.
