Is Giannis Antetokounmpo really serious about potentially leaving the Milwaukee Bucks? The former back-to-back recently sounded the alarm, so to speak, after hinting at the possibility of jumping ship if he’s unable to win a second championship in Milwaukee.
You can be sure that this has put a few teams out there on alert as they consider the possibility of landing Giannis Antetokounmpo in the not-so-distant future.
Lakers, Knicks Named as Potential Landing Spots for Giannis Antetokounmpo
Two teams that have already been identified as potential destinations for the Bucks talisman are the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks. This is according to NBA insider Marc Stein:
“The Lakers and the Knicks are already being mentioned as franchises presumed to interest Antetokounmpo down the road if he does decide to move on from Milwaukee, which just made a slew of moves (re-signing Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez and replacing Mike Budenholzer as coach with Adrian Griffin) to try to appease its face of the franchise…” Stein wrote (paywalled).
Stein is implying here that it’s Giannis himself that has interest in possibly joining the Lakers or the Knicks down the road. If this is true, then it’s no surprise that Antetokounmpo considers these two high-profile teams as his next destination after his highly successful tint with a small-market team like the Bucks.
If he does choose the Lakers, then Giannis would potentially be the heir apparent to LeBron James’ throne in Hollywood. King James still has a few good years left in him, but there’s no denying that Father Time is catching up with the four-time NBA champ. Giannis Antetokounmpo definitely fits the bill as LA’s next cornerstone superstar.
For what it’s worth, Giannis is still under contract with the Bucks through 2026. However, he has a player option for the 2025-26 season, which means that if he wanted to, he could walk away from Milwaukee at the end of next season.
