Giannis Antetokounmpo put the Milwaukee Bucks on high alert after he came out with a clear indication of his willingness to leave if the team is unable to align with his championship ideology. The seven-time All-Star didn’t exactly threaten the Bucks, but he made it clear that he has no intention of signing an extension this summer — and that he’s going to have to think long and hard about putting pen to paper on a new deal this time next year.
NBA Rumors: Bucks Linked to Trade for Magic’s Jalen Suggs
At this point, the Bucks have to be thinking about what they can do to strengthen their team. Based on his comments, Giannis doesn’t seem to believe that re-signing Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez, and Jae Crowder in NBA free agency is enough.
This is exactly why Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report believes that it would be in Milwaukee’s best interest to try and take a gamble on Orlando Magic guard Jalen Suggs. The former Gonzaga standout has been named as one of two potential trade targets for the Bucks, along with veterans Alec Burks and TJ McConnell.
“The Bucks have to keep searching for rotation upgrades, whether that’s adding wing depth with Burks, upping their playmaking with McConnell or taking a flier on Suggs, the No. 5 pick of the 2021 draft who might need a fresh start following a pair of disappointing seasons with the Orlando Magic,” Buckley wrote.
Suggs stands out as the most intriguing among the three, at least in my humble opinion. The 22-year-old hasn’t been able to live up to the lofty expectations most folks had on him — including the Magic brass — when they used their No. 5 overall pick on him a couple of years ago, and Suggs has since fallen in the pecking order in Orlando amid the slew of young talent in the squad.
It remains unclear what the Bucks will need to give up to get their hands on Jalen Suggs, but given his current trajectory, Milwaukee could probably get him for a bargain. In truth, the 6-foot-4 combo guard could end up being a bust (again) with the Bucks, but he has enough upside to make him a very intriguing and potentially game-changing addition for Milwaukee and their title hopes in the coming years.
