NBA news: Bobby Portis made headlines on Monday after the Milwaukee Bucks big man came out with a huge performance in Team USA’s tune-up game against Puerto Rico. Portis scored 11 points in just 13 minutes, providing a massive boost for the squad off the bench as they blew out their opponents, 117-74.
NBA News: Bobby Portis Reacts to Being Team USA’s ‘OG’
Portis is not Team USA’s star player. It’s far from that, actually. While the Bucks big man is absolutely no bum, the squad boasts an array of superstars in the likes of Anthony Edwards, Jaren Jackson Jr., Jalen Brunson, and Tyrese Haliburton, to name a few.
Apparently, his younger teammates see Portis playing the role of an elder statesman — something that the 28-year-old has had a bit of trouble coming to terms with:
“Anthony Edwards keep calling me OG,” Portis said. “Keep calling me, ‘Yo, OG! OG! OG! OG this, OG that. You the OG.’ So I’m like, ‘Dang, that’s crazy. I’m going into my 9th year, not even 30 years old yet, and they calling me OG.”
To be fair, Team USA is packed with young talents. The average age of the squad is 24, which is why it isn’t surprising that Portis is considered the OG. I guess the Bucks center just wasn’t expecting it.

In the same interview, Portis was also asked which teammates he was the most excited to hang out with. The Little Rock, Arkansas native had one specific player in mind, and that was Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards:
“I like Anthony Edwards a lot. That’s my guy,” Portis said. “(He’s) from the South too, kind of talk like me as well. So definitely someone I could connect with for sure.
“… He’s a good dude, man. Great kid. Obviously, hell of a basketball talent. Aside of that, he has a great spirit about himself that I like.”

It was actually Edwards who endowed Portis with the OG title, so now that the latter has embraced the role (at least somewhat), this will likely make their bond even stronger.
