The Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets are often in rumors surrounding impending front office free agent David Stearns. With the MLB trade deadline less than one week away this time there have been reports regarding veteran outfielder Mark Canha and that Milwaukee is expressing interest in acquiring him.
MLB Trade Rumors: Milwaukee Brewers reportedly interested in New York Mets outfielder Mark Canha.
According to both Will Sammon and Tim Britton, who cover the Mets through The Athletic, Milwaukee has expressed interest in outfielder Mark Canha. Mark Canha is in his second season in New York and he has a $11.5 MM club option for the 2024 season. His numbers are down this year and the Mets are looking to sell, which makes him a realistic rental trade candidate.
As mentioned above the overall numbers for Mark Canha are down this season. He has a .239/.338/.375 slash line with a 99 OPS+. 2017 was the last year he finished with an OPS+ lower than league average (100).
Outside of being an outfielder Mark Canha has played quite a bit of first base this season. Corner outfield and first base are two highly coveted positions at the trade deadline, so the fact that he can fill in at either makes him an intriguing trade candidate.
The cost to acquire Mark Canha should not be too steep. Adding him could potentially improve the Brewers while not sacrificing much in return, but he may not move the needle a whole lot.
