MLB Rumors: Josh Hader entered this off-season as the best closer/reliever available and he has not yet signed a contract. Reports have indicated that he is chasing a deal larger than the five years, $102 million that the New York Mets gave Edwin Diaz. So far no team has been willing to pay that.
Recently MLB Analyst and Insider Jim Bowden appeared on CBS Sports to discuss the current state of Josh Hader’s market. The free agent is still commanding a contract north of $100 million and three big market teams have been linked to him.
Three big market teams have been linked to free agent closer Josh Hader (MLB Rumors).
Jim Bowden indicated that three teams are “in play” for Josh Hader. He mentioned the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Due to the total contract value that he is seeking it is not surprising that three big market teams were linked to him.
“What is interesting here is that all three of these teams appear more interested in signing or trading for a starting pitcher rather than signing a closer. For example if the Yankees aren’t able to bring Jordan Montgomery back then they will not be afraid to pivot to Josh Hader, but all three teams are in contention for him.”
-Jim Bowden
The way Bowden makes it sound is that once a few more dominoes fall in the starting pitching department then Josh Hader’s market will heat up. It will be interesting to see where he ends up signing.
