MLB News: The Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres have a rich trade history over the past few seasons with deals involving Eric Lauer, Luis Urias, Josh Hader, and Victor Caratini having transpired in the past. Both teams typically are heavily involved in trade discussions, so could they be good trade partners again in 2024?
The San Diego Padres are seeking outfield help.
After trading away Juan Soto and Trent Grisham this off-season the Padres only guaranteed everyday outfielder heading into 2024 is Fernando Tatis Jr. Journeyman outfielder Jose Azocar is an option as well, but prospects like Cal Mitchell, Graham Pauley, Jackson Merrill, and Jakob Marsee are expected to compete for spots in spring training. This situation has them in need of outfielders who have MLB experience.
Currently the Milwaukee Brewers have a plethora of MLB ready outfielders.
The Milwaukee Brewers are loaded with MLB ready outfielders. Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick, and Joey Wiemer all have big league experience and Jackson Chourio figures to takeover an everyday role at some point this season. There is not room for all of these young and controllable players, so trading one of them could make some sense.
A San Diego Padres writer pegged Garrett Mitchell as their top trade target from the Milwaukee Brewers (MLB News).
Clark Fahrenhold of the East Village Times recently proposed that Garrett Mitchell could satisfy the Padres shortage of outfielders. This trade would fill a need for San Diego and open up playing opportunities for some of Milwaukee’s other outfielders. He proposed that the Brew Crew could be intrigued by some of their pitching prospects and specifically mentioned Adam Mazur or Victor Lizarraga.
Mazur is the Padres eighth ranked prospect and Lizarraga 17th. Both are solid starting pitching prospects that have ceilings of back end of the rotation type talents. Neither right-handed hurler has overpowering stuff on the mound and they tend to pitch to contact.
If a trade were to occur I would expect the Brewers to target pitchers with higher ceilings, but sometimes Milwaukee does take a quantity approach in trades.
