On paper, everything seems rosy for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. They are currently second in the Eastern Conference standings with a 29-13 record and have won four of their last five games after taking down the lowly Detroit Pistons on the road last Saturday. However, even the Bucks have issues, particularly on the defensive side of the floor, as pointed out by Elder Marques Johnson.
“Milwaukee has the third-least efficient defense in January allowing over 120 points per 100 possessions. Only their Monday opponent (Pistons) and the Warriors have been worse in January.”
Milwaukee Bucks’ Defense Needs Work

Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY SportsScoring the ball isn’t an issue for the Bucks. With the constant threat of the duo of Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, the Bucks always have an alpha to rely on when looking to get buckets. They are second overall in the league with 124.6 points per game and No. 1 with a 58.0 effective field goal percentage. The Bucks have to be that good offensively to compensate for an apparently faulty defense that is bottom 10 in the NBA with 120.6 points allowed per contest and just 22nd in terms of adjusted defensive rating (117.3).
That was further highlighted in the win over Detroit, a team that the Bucks were supposed to not just beat but crush. Lillard had to muscle out 45 points and Antetokounmpo needed 31 points just to defeat Detroit by six points. That speaks a lot about the disparity in the qualities of the Bucks’ offense and defense.
The good news for the Bucks is that it’s still not too late to change their ways on that end of the court.
