While the Milwaukee Bucks are filling up their coaching staff around head coach Adrian Griffin, other teams are filling their staffs around their new head coaches as well. Recently, the Boston Celtics made the decision to retain head coach Joe Mazzulla after a successful regular season and deep playoff run. As he fills out his staff, he decided to go out and sign one of the brightest assistant coaches on the market: former Milwaukee Bucks point guard Sam Cassell.
Former Milwaukee Bucks Point Guard Sam Cassell Is Being Hired by the Boston Celtics

Shams Charania of The Athletic broke the news about Cassell’s hire on Twitter:

A 16-year NBA veteran as a player, Cassell won three NBA Championships. He won his first two with the Houston Rockets during his first two seasons in the league. He won his third and final NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 2008, his last year as a player. Cassell played for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1999-2003 and was a part of their Big Three which also included Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen. The trio led the Bucks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2001, where they lost to Allen Iverson’s Philadelphia 76ers in seven games.
Following his playing career, Cassell was hired by Washington Wizards head coach Flip Saunders to be an assistant on his staff. Cassell stayed with Washington through 2014, despite Saunders leaving in 2012. In 2014, he was hired by Doc Rivers, his former coach from when he played with the Celtics, to be an assistant on his staff with the Los Angeles Clippers. When Rivers left the Clippers for the 76ers, Cassell followed him to Philadelphia.
Now, Cassell is returning to the team he won his final championship with as a player, a long-time coaching veteran that will be of great assistance to Mazzulla, who will be entering his second season as head coach.
