After half a season playing for the Dallas Mavericks, Grant Williams found himself playing for the Charlotte Hornets once this year’s trade deadline passed. Turns out, the former Boston Celtics rookie was almost traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for one its fan-favorite players.
Williams started to make waves in college when he stood out as Tennessee’s best player for two years straight. At that point, the power forward won back-to-back SEC Player of the Year honors and led his team to a second seed finish in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

Thanks to his time in Tennessee, Williams caught the attention of the Boston Celtics when they selected him with the 22nd pick in the 2019 Draft. From there, the forward established himself as a wing that can defend multiple positions and hit open shots on the other end of the court. During his four-year run with the Celtics, he averaged 6.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.
He was later traded to the Dallas Mavericks during the previous offseason. When the front office saw he didn’t really fit with Luka Doncic and company, Williams was traded before the deadline to the Charlotte Hornets for forward P.J. Washington and several picks.
Charlotte Hornets Star Grant Williams Recalls Time He Was Almost Traded to the Milwaukee Bucks

While Williams’s stint with the Hornets looked promising, the former Boston Celtics star could’ve played for the Bucks instead. In a video shared by MFFL Nation on X:

The proposed trade could have paired fan-favorite Bobby Portis with the duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. As of now, they are leading the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Also, Williams could have had more opportunities to shine in the playoffs, especially with All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo injured.

No one can know for now how Williams would have fared in Milwaukee, Fortunately, the fans will still have Bobby Portis for the foreseeable future.
