Just recently, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk fought it out in a heavyweight title bout many expected to be a banger. However, Milwaukee Bucks All-Star point guard Damian Lillard pointed out a problem he had with how the match was officiated by the referee.
At some point during the ninth round, Usyk had Fury in the corner and pounded him there. As the British fighter was getting pummeled, the referee intervened and separated the two. This momentary respite gave Fury a chance to catch his breath and recover before the bout was resumed. The bell was rang shortly after, which stopped Usyk from landing more punches.
At the end of the match, Usyk’s hand was raised as the Ukrainian boxer won the match via split decision. A pair of judges had him win the bout with 115-112 and 114-113, respectively. Meanwhile, the third judge have the win to Fury with a score of 114-113.
After the match, Fury said he dominated most of the fight against Usyk. He added that this was one of the most daftest decisions in boxing and promised to be back. For his part, the Ukrainian boxer clarified that he is ready for a rematch while thanking everybody for the opportunity given to him.
Milwaukee Bucks Guard Damian Lillard Bares Problem With Referee In Tyson Fury-Oleksandr Usyk Bout
During the fight, Bucks star Damian Lillard pointed out how the referees stopped the fight in favor of Fury. In a tweet he posted on his official X account:
“Refs is crazy man smh,” Lillard tweeted.
Lillard himself is a boxing fan, even having practiced for the sport at some point of his life. He is currently playing for the Bucks alongside All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, but were eliminated from contention by Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers.
It remains to be seen how Fury will bounce back from this loss. What’s certain, though, is that Lillard will catch the rematch and keep an eye out for the referee of that fight.
