Doc Rivers knows all about the “Fear the Dear” mantra of the Milwaukee Bucks, but in his eyes, the team has yet to personify that in full in the 2023-24 NBA season. That brings us to his intriguing quote from his press conference last Saturday when he was introduced by the team as its new head coach.
“I think we have to find our identity,” Rivers said. “Like if you’re gonna have (the slogan) Fear the Deer, you gotta fear the deer.”
“I asked them, ‘Who are we?’ When a team is connected and they got it, they’ll give you an answer. We don’t have an answer yet. We gotta find what are we, who are we.”
What Changes Can The Milwaukee Bucks Expect as Doc Rivers Takes Over as Head Coach?
On paper, the Bucks clearly look like a legitimate contender for the NBA title. They are 32-14 so far with an offense that’s arguably the best in the league. However, that’s not going to stop Rivers from implementing his vision of the team and that clearly includes finding the team’s true identity. Perhaps, Rivers was implying about the return to the old menacing form of the Bucks’ defense.
The departure of Jrue Holiday has impacted the effectiveness of Milwaukee’s defense but that’s still not a good enough excuse for fans to accept the team’s up-and-down performance on that end of the floor. Through 46 games, the Bucks are just 24th in the league with 120.1 points allowed per contest and only 20th in adjusted defensive efficiency.
It will take time before Rivers and the Bucks assimilate to each other. In any case, the change in the head-coaching directing in Milwaukee brings optimism for an already loaded squad that may just need a few tinkering in its system to reach its true potential.
