The Milwaukee Bucks brought on Patrick Beverley in the offseason to help alleviate the backcourt load on Damian Lillard. Beverley, however, isn’t exactly your typical point guard and the fact that the feisty veteran could be on his way out this summer in NBA free agency poses a significant dilemma for the Bucks heading into the new season.
The good news for Milwaukee is that there are a host of possible options on the market for them as they look to find a legitimate backup for Dame ahead for 2024-25.
Milwaukee Bucks: 4 Intriguing PG Signings in Free Agency
Keith Smith of spotrac provided an in-depth analysis of the Bucks’ financial situation heading into the offseason. This includes the type of budget they have in terms of bringing in new players via free agency, which at this point is not substantial at all.
Simply put, Milwaukee’s salary cap situation will prevent them from signing a big name in free agency. There are, however, a number of viable options for the squad:
“The Bucks could use a real backup point guard. The same principle applies of not putting too much on Lillard in the regular season. Beverly can sort of fill that role, but he’s not a ballhandler or playmaker. Aaron Holiday, Dennis Smith Jr., Delon Wright or Jordan McLaughlin would all be good options,” Smith wrote.
Regardless of whether or not Beverley bolts, it would still be in the Bucks’ best interest to bring in another point guard who can fill the playmaking void Lillard leaves whenever he’s on the bench or sidelined with injury.
Aaron Holiday, who suited up for the Houston Rockets this past season, is a particularly intriguing prospect. Apart from what he brings to the table, the 27-year-old is also the younger brother of a well-loved former Buck, Jrue Holiday.
The Milwaukee faithful still miss Jrue so perhaps bringing his younger brother into the mix would be a next-best-thing sort of consolation for them. Plus, he’s a considerably capable playmaker and ballhandler as well — considering the Bucks’ financial constraints, of course.
