The Milwaukee Bucks this offseason will be in the news for a lot of reasons. They are looking to potentially trade some players and are looking to give contract extensions out to some other players.
The key this offseason for the Milwaukee Bucks is to build around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard for the long haul. It will not be a quiet offseason for general manager Jon Horst by any means. He has already been in the news this offseason because he was previously linked for the Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations position, but Horst is not going anywhere.
There will be some other players that could be expendable like Khris Middleton, Pat Connaughton, Brook Lopez, and Bobby Portis Jr. Is there any update on any of those players?
Milwaukee Bucks Fan Favorite Bobby Portis Jr. Is Eligible For a Contract Extension This Summer
Portis Jr. is 29 years old and played a huge role for the Bucks this past season. He was one of the best players off the bench in the NBA. Bobby Portis Jr. played in all 82 games last season for the Milwaukee Bucks and averaged 13.8 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.4 BPG, and 0.8 SPG.
Brian Sampson of forbes.com wrote about Bobby Portis Jr. being eligible for a contract extension this offseason for Milwaukee by saying:
“Bobby Portis has become a beloved figure among his teammates and fans during his four seasons with the Bucks. His tenacity and unwavering determination have set him apart, as he has reinvented himself with the Bucks. In June 2022, Portis signed a four-year, $49 million deal with the Bucks—a contract that turned out to be a bargain compared to what he might have secured elsewhere.
For the 2024-25 season, he’ll earn $12.6 million, with a player option worth $13.4 million in 2025-26. If he declines the option, he could potentially sign a lucrative four-year, $78.9 million extension, boosting his earnings to $17.6 million in 2025-26—a substantial increase from his current contract.
However, the Bucks face a dilemma. If they’re unwilling to meet Portis’s demands, they might explore trading him during the offseason when his value is at its peak. Despite finishing third in the Sixth Man of the Year voting and providing a valuable scoring option off the bench, Portis’s fit alongside the Bucks’ superstars remains imperfect.
His performance in certain playoff series has been inconsistent, leaving Milwaukee with a challenging decision—one that could impact both the court and the locker room dynamics.”
Losing Bobby Portis Jr. in a trade this summer could come at a cost because they would have no other bench scoring if they lost him. According to Spotrac, he will have a player option for the 2025-2026 season.
The Milwaukee Bucks are already paying Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, and Damian Lillard. They will need to trade players like Brook Lopez and Pat Connaughton if they are going to pay Portis Jr. and they may need to trade Middleton as well.
Bobby Portis Jr. is 29 years old and is one of the younger players on the roster for a team that is older. A lot of fans would be upset if he left the team, but this is a tough business decision that Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst will need to make about his future.
