Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras has been off to a hot start to the 2024 MLB regular season. On Sunday, Contreras hit his fourth home run of the season against former Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes to lead off the game against the Baltimore Orioles.
Even with the 6-4 loss on Sunday for Milwaukee against Baltimore, the Milwaukee Brewers would not be off to a 10-4 start this season without his success. Contreras also has 15 RBIs to start the season and also stole a base on Sunday. His batting average this season is .375 and his on-base percentage is .455.
William Contreras was the designated hitter on Sunday for the Brewers and Gary Sanchez was the starting catcher. With the way he has started the 2024 season, there is no doubt that he is on his way to being the starting catcher for the National League in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.
Contreras leads the team currently in RBIs, but Christian Yelich currently leads the team in home runs to start the season with five for the Brewers. If Milwaukee ever lost him to injury at any point this season, it would be a major blow to this lineup.
Milwaukee Brewers Catcher William Contreras Dominates These Stats Compared to Other Catching Stats To Start the 2024 Season
Contreras is one of the best catchers in the MLB to start the 2024 season if not the best catcher this season. He is tied for the 13th most home runs this season in baseball and Shea Langliers of the Oakland Athletics and Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals also have four home runs. Langliers has eight RBIs and Perez has 15 RBIs, but there is some stat that he has compared to those two.
William Contreras is seventh in MLB this season in OPS with 1.116. The only other catcher who is ranked in the top 25 in all of MLB this season is Logan O’Hoppe of the Los Angeles Angels with a .974 OPS. Contreras also leads all catchers to start the season in batting average and the catcher who is second in batting average is Los Angeles Dodgers Will Smith at .371.
The Dodgers have a ton of other stars in the lineup if they didn’t have Smith at catcher. There is a difference between Smith being on the Dodgers and Contreras on the Brewers. He could be in the National League MVP race if the Brewers win the division again this season.
The point is that Contreras needs to be the starting catcher for the National League if his play keeps up this season. Catcher is a really hard position to play in all of baseball. Contreras is 26 years old and is about to enter the prime of his MLB career and needs to be signed to a contract extension by the Milwaukee Brewers sooner rather than later.
