A rain delay never stopped these Milwaukee Brewers. The crew opened up a three-game series against the New York Yankees on Friday. This is the first time since 2017 that Milwaukee’s been at Yankee Stadium.
With a season-high tying 16 hits on the night, nine of those coming from the seventh and eighth inning alone, the Brewers were able to come back to score eight unanswered runs in their 8-2 victory over New York.
The Yankees struck first in the third with a single by Aaron Judge, followed by a homer by rookie Jasson Dominguez off of starter Colin Rea. It didn’t take too long for the Brewers’ offense to respond, however. Carlos Santana led off the fourth inning with a single, and Willy Adames hit a game-tying two-run home run in the fourth inning off Yankees starter Luis Severino. Adames also had a two-out RBI double in the seventh inning.

Brice Turang opened up the fifth inning with a single off of Severino who seemed to be in a bit of pain after his pitch, having to exit the game with a left side injury. Jhony Brito came on in relief for the Yankees, and started off his appearance by issuing a walk to Christian Yelich with one out to put two on base, but Milwaukee wasn’t able to capitalize on that as Contreras and Santana both recorded two outs to end the inning.
Rea struck out six in his 4 2/3 innings of work, retiring the final seven batters he faced. Abner Uribe would come on in the fifth inning for Rea to face Aaron Judge in a power matchup. Uribe would come out of the battle victorious, striking out Judge with a 100.3 mph sinker. Uribe snatched up his first career victory with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of work in Friday’s contest.

Andruw Monasterio had a lead off double in the seventh inning, traveling to third with a ground-out to right by Christian Yelich, and was able to score with a single to left by William Contreras. Contreras stole second and scored on a Carlos Santana RBI single. Adames would then hit a double down the right field line to bring their lead to 5-2.

But the crew wasn’t done as they went into the eighth. Both Mark Canha and Brice Turang singled off of Greg Weissert, followed by another Monasterio double, allowing Milwaukee to score two more runs and upping the lead 7-2. Contreras and Santana again both singled, making it an 8-2 ballgame. Every single batter in the Brewers’ lineup on Friday recorded a hit, and five of them had multiple hits.
The Milwaukee Brewers gain a full game in the NL Central standings, now putting the Chicago Cubs three games behind them as the Cubs lost their second straight game to the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier on Friday. The Brewers play 23 games over 24 days to conclude the season, and the race for the NL Central pennant continues. The magic number for the crew to clinch the division over the Cubs is now at 19.
