The Milwaukee Brewers opened the season against the Chicago Cubs. At the end of Spring Training, the Brewers had a lot of young stand-out players that proved they could play at the big league level. Brice Turang, Gus Varland, and Joey Wiemer (who got called up due to Luis Urias’s injury) are all on the big league squad. The Brewers also have Garrett Mitchell starting in Center Field, coming into his first full year at the big leagues. They also have Sal Frelick who had a solid shot at making the big leagues, but is starting the season in Triple-A Nashville. Brewers have many options going into the 2023 season: they could work on developing the young guys in the big leagues, or continue to play the veterans and try for a playoff run.
Starting the young guys
The Brewers could start the young players and develop them in the big leagues for years to come. This could be done if the Brewers are out of contention and taking it as an evaluation year. The Brew Crew has a great farm system this year and might want to use it. Starting the young players could set them up for 2024 and beyond.
Keep rolling with the Vets
The Brewers are playoff contenders again for 2023. They have the pitching staff to get the job done. Right now, the Brewer’s best chance to make the playoffs are going with players like Urias, Yeli, Winker, etc. The Brewers brought in Voit and Contreras to try and put them over the top. We will see if that works in 2023.
The point of this article was not to say the season is a wash after a couple of games. On the contrary, it is necessary to mention these topics, especially with the abundance of young talent that the Brewers carry. Watching what the Brewers choose to do at specific points of the season will be fun, considering the options they have this season.
