Milwaukee Brewers rookie starting pitcher Robert Gasser is in the process of seeking out a third opinion regarding his elbow. This go around he will see orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister. Dr. Meister performed teammate Brandon Woodruffs shoulder surgery last off-season.
What was recommended from the first two opinions that Robert Gasser received?

Prior to Robert Gasser’s most recent elbow issue sidelining him it’s important to note that he began the 2024 season on the injured list with what was called bone spurs in his elbow. He was able to treat it with rehab and until recently had been doing well.
Most recently Gasser has been sidelined with what is being called a flexor strain. Per Adam McCalvy at MLB.com the first opinion that he received indicated that he could treat this with rehab. A second opinion, from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, recommended reconstructive surgery for his ulnar collateral ligament.
“He had an elbow injury early, rehabbed it, came out and pitched very well, and five starts later, it’s back. One doctor says ‘get reconstruction.’
(In regard to rehabbing his current injury) “what are we going to get? And how do we know? And where’s the kid’s mental state going to be? He’s a rookie. So I’m a little more pessimistic about that.”

Manager Pat Murphy believes that we will not see Robert Gasser the remainder of the season, but he is seeking out a third opinion.

There is a perception that Robert Gasser will be out the remainder of the season, but that is not true…yet. Manager Pat Murphy is operating like that is the case and that is firmly his opinion. At the time of this publication Gasser had not yet received his third opinion from Dr. Keith Meister.
“You’re probably not going to see Gasser for the remainder of the season.”

More bad news regarding the Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff.

In addition to the Robert Gasser news the Brewers also announced bad news regarding two rehabbing starting pitchers. The first is that Joe Ross had a setback and won’t be able to return as originally planned on their next road trip. Secondly Jakob Junis saw a dip in his velocity during his most recent Triple-A rehab game and as a result he will head to Arizona to pitch a simulated game in a controlled environment.
Regardless of what happens going forward Robert Gasser is looking at minimum a lengthy injured list stint and Milwaukee is finding themselves in more desperate need of starting pitching depth. It will be interesting to see what decisions are made in the near future and how the team manages this.
