The Milwaukee Brewers were without promising pitching talent Aaron Ashby for the entire 2023 season because he underwent shoulder surgery in the spring.  Velocity concerns upon returning to pitching ultimately prevented him from coming back to the big leagues late last season.

Aaron Ashby, who is currently just 25 years old, is locked into a five year, $20.5 million deal and should return to the Brewers in 2024.  Due to being on a time crunch the plan in 2023 was to bring him back as a reliever, but with an entire winter to prepare one off-season question is what role will he fill next year?

Matt Arnold reveals the expectations that the Milwaukee Brewers have for Aaron Ashby in 2024.

Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Arnold speaks during an an end of season press conference at American Family Field in Milwaukee on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023.

Prior to 2023 Aaron Ashby was utilized both as a starting pitcher as well as swing-man/long reliever.  Results on the mound had been variable with clear signs of further development needed.  Command was one of the larger issues, but his ability to generate swings and misses as well as ground balls was a big strength of his.

After a year of recovery and not pitching in the big leagues Matt Arnold says the expectation is for him to factor into the starting rotation.  There have been no setbacks this off-season and Arnold says, “he’s on track to be a part of our rotation, hopefully next year. That’s the expectation. This guy is working his tail off to try to come back and he’s definitely on the right track.”

When asked about him being ready for the start of the season Matt Arnold was non-committal to that by saying, “You want to be cautious with these types of things. When he’s ready, he’s certainly going to be part of our mix, for sure.”

Starting pitchers currently on the 40-man roster include Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta, Wade Miley, Colin Rea, Adrian Houser, and Joe Ross.  There are still moves to be made this off-season, but if Aaron Ashby can return to full health he would be a big boost to the pitching staff regardless of what role he is used in.
