The Milwaukee Brewers are continuing to make moves early into the 2024 regular season. One of their more recent additions has been catcher Francisco Mejia. He agreed to a minor league deal with the team and will report to Triple-A Nashville.
Francisco Mejia has agreed to a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Kiley McDaniel of ESPN reported that Francisco Mejia and the Brewers have agreed to a minor league contract. Across seven years the 28 year old has spent time in the big leagues with the Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres, and Tampa Bay Rays. The switch hitter has a career .678 OPS but has not logged more than 300 at-bats in a season.
Why did the Brewer sign Francisco Mejia?
Spring Training standout Eric Haase recently cleared waivers and accepted an assignment in the Brewers minor league system, so why did they sign Mejia? One reason may be because top catching prospect Jeferson Quero injured his shoulder while diving back to first base, was diagnosed with a shoulder subluxation, and his timeline for return is unknown.
Yes and no. Quero was still awaiting a second opinion on Wednesday but either way will be out for a bit so they needed someone.

The Brewers nearly acquired Francisco Mejia via trade in 2016.
In 2016 Milwaukee was prompted to trade catcher Jonathan Lucroy. They had a trade initially in place with Cleveland that would have made Francisco Mejia, shortstop Yu-Cheng Chang, outfielder Greg Allen and right-hander Shawn Armstrong all Brewers. Rather Lucroy vetoed that trade and ended up being dealt to the Texas Rangers instead.
