The Milwaukee Brewers have filled a hole on the roster by signing a backup catcher. They were in need of another player to play behind the dish because former backup Victor Caratini became a free agent and signed with the Houston Astros. Additionally their other catcher on the 40-man roster outside of starter William Contreras is prospect Jeferson Quero and he has not yet played a game past Double-A.

This off-season free agent catchers Tom Murphy and Austin Hedges inked contracts with new teams. With those two out Joey Bart was rumored to be a trade candidate, but Milwaukee elected to go a different route by signing 31 year old Eric Haase to a major league deal.
Catcher Eric Haase has signed a one year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Through six major league seasons Eric Haase has spent his entire career in the American League Central division. He was drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in 2011, made his MLB debut with them in 2018, and also played for the Detroit Tigers.
With the Tigers in 2021 and 2022 Eric Haase put up great offensive numbers. He hit 22 home runs in 2021 and 14 in 2022 while also having an OPS+ of 103 and 112 during those seasons. Last year he was unable to replicate that success.

Defensively the Brewers catching lab will go to work with Eric Haase. Baseball savant has rated him in the poor to average categories in advanced metrics such as blocks above average, framing, and pop time. In the past Milwaukee has managed to quickly improve catchers defense and Eric Haase will be their next project.
