The Milwaukee Brewers are heading to the playoffs for the second consecutive season because they won the National League Central. Milwaukee entering the final week of the 2024 season has an 89-67.
The Brewers will be the only team from the National League Central division to make the playoffs. As for the Cincinnati Reds this season, they are in fourth place in the division with a 76-81 record entering the final week of the 2024 season.
Milwaukee Brewers Rival Cincinnati Reds Fire Manager David Bell Entering the Final Week Of the 2024 Season
On Sunday night, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that the Cincinnati Reds fired manager David Bell. He received a contract extension and it ran through the 2026 season. With the Reds missing the playoffs this season, their number one agenda this offseason will be trying to find a new manager.
Bench coach Freddie Benavides will be the interim manager for the time being. Maybe the Reds will make him the long-term manager after this season. It turned out well for the Milwaukee Brewers when they promoted Pat Murphy from bench coach to manager after Craig Counsell left for the Chicago Cubs in the offseason.
David Bell has been the Cincinnati Reds manager since the 2019 season. He managed 865 games and had a 409-456 record and a .473 winning percentage. Cincinnati only made the playoffs one time when he was the manager.
Fans React
Reds management was so in love with David Bell’s job performance last summer that they gave him a three year contract extension.
14 months later the manager is so bad at his job that they’ll pay him for two years to not work.
That reflects poorly. But not on David Bell.

Two things about the David Bell firing can and are true:
1. He was not the problem in Cincinnati.
2. He was also never the solution. He should’ve never received that extension. He got fired after the final home game. That’s on purpose, not coincidence.

We will see if the Reds make more firings in the front office either before or at the end of the 2024 MLB season. As for the Milwaukee Brewers, they are in a much better spot with the front office and their managerial position.
