Milwaukee Brewers trade deadline addition Frankie Montas recently had his worst outing since being acquired.  The starting pitcher was tagged with seven earned runs (eight runs total) over 2.2 innings pitched against the Arizona Diamondbacks in which they also hit three home runs off of him.  Post game manager Pat Murphy revealed that Montas made a crucial mistake that was allowing the opposing batters to know what pitch was coming.

Frankie Montas was exposed by the Arizona Diamondbacks for tipping his pitches.

During a quote filled post game press conference with manager Pat Murphy he revealed that Frankie Montas was tipping his pitches.  Murphy said the runners on second base could see his grip and was then relaying it to the batters.  Teams typically have a strategic way of relaying this information such as the base runner calling the batter by their first name for a fastball or last name for off-speed.  Murphy didn’t reveal what code the Diamondbacks were using but he did acknowledge that he was aware it was happening.

Not to be lost in the heap of postgame from this afternoon, Pat Murphy said that Frankie Montas was tipping pitches and the runners on second base could see his grip. They were then relaying it to the batters.

Prior to Frankie Montas’ last outing he had been a great pickup for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Outside of this disastrous appearance against the Diamondbacks Frankie Montas has been a great addition to the Brewers.   Of his 10 starts this was just the second where he failed to reach the fifth inning.  He additionally had two double digit strikeout games in September and has three outings with Milwaukee where he hasn’t allowed an earned run.

When will Frankie Montas get to pitch next?

With just six games remaining in the regular season Frankie Montas should get one more chance to take the mound before the playoffs.  His next outing could be a scheduled abbreviated start in order to keep him fresh for a possible post-season appearance in which he could potentially be a starter.  Regardless his next time out the primary objective will be hiding his pitch grips in order to avoid giving opposing batters a major advantage.
