The Milwaukee Brewers fell short of sweeping the Cincinnati Reds, as they suffered a 4-3 loss in extra innings of the series finale on Sunday. The Brewers had a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but the Reds tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the same frame. Milwaukee would then go scoreless the rest of the way while going just 0-for-21 at the plate.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy lamented his team’s anemic offense over such a long period in the contest.
Via the Associated Press (h/t ESPN):
“Can’t really shut it down like that,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “There were a couple really hard contacts in there. It was hard to watch those 21 at-bats. It’s disappointing in so many ways. Just need to concentrate on what we could have done better today.”
The Brewers were also just 2-for-10 when there was a runner at least in scoring position.
The usually effective Jackson Chourio had one of those days, as he went 0-for-5 while Blake Perkins and William Contreras were a combined 0-for-9 with two strikeouts.
Brewers looking to rebound right away after finale loss
Milwaukee will look to regroup and hope that things will get better for its offense when the Brewers kick off a series this Monday night at home against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals. The last time these teams met in a series, the Brewers were outscored in a three-game set at Busch Stadium, 15-9, with the Cardinals winning twice.
On the mound for the Brewers in Game 1 against the Cards is Freddy Peralta, who is 9-7 this season with a 3.70 ERA.
