The Milwaukee Brewers reached one of their season goals earlier as they became National League Central division champions. They are locked into the three seed for the playoffs and will host the best of three games Wild Card Series that starts on Tuesday, October 3. What we do not know yet is who they will be playing.

On Saturday night the final two Wild Card teams in the Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins punched their tickets to the playoffs. With one game to go in the regular season their post season positioning is still up for grabs. Let’s take a further look at some possible scenarios that could play out.
Scenarios that will impact if the Milwaukee Brewers play the Arizona Diamondbacks or Miami Marlins in the Wild Card Series.

Entering play on Sunday, October 1 the current sixth seed is the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 84-77 record. The Miami Marlins, who have an 84-76 record, are the fifth seed. They have played one less game so far due to Thursday’s game against the New York Mets being suspended by rain.
An important factor with these two teams is that Miami owns the tie-breaker advantage. This means that any combination of a Marlins win on Sunday or Diamondbacks loss would result in the seeding remaining where it is and would make the Marlins traveling to New York on Monday pointless from a seeding perspective. If both teams lose on Sunday then the seeding additionally will be unaffected.
On Sunday should the Marlins lose and the Diamondbacks win then Arizona would have a half game advantage over Miami. This would change the playoff seeding and in theory would make New York and Miami finishing their suspended game necessary.
According to Bob Nightengale, MLB has decided that no matter what they will not make Miami travel to New York on Monday. Rather if the Marlins lose and the Diamondbacks win they are just going to declare Miami the sixth seed.
This has been confirmed by several others around Major League Baseball. Dominic Controneo helped lay out a nice summary of all the scenarios to look for on Sunday that will impact who the Milwaukee Brewers play in the playoffs.

The Brewers will host whichever team is the sixth seed in the playoffs. By Sunday afternoon we will know if this is the Arizona Diamondbacks or the Miami Marlins.
