The Milwaukee Brewers currently do not have an everyday first baseman. Since the start of the off-season Carlos Santana has become a free agent and Rowdy Tellez has signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates after being non-tendered. Jake Bauers was brought in via trade, but a starting gig for him is not guaranteed.
In order to address the hole at first base it is possible that Milwaukee pursues a reunion with Carlos Santana or calls up versatile infielder Tyler Black. Another option would be to sign someone new. One intriguing option that exists is a free agent who formerly played for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Milwaukee Brewers free agent target: Former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins.
At 30 years old Rhys Hoskins finds himself as a free agent for the first time in his career. Since being drafted in the fifth round in 2014 he has spent his entire career in the Phillies organization that includes six years of big league experience. Due to a spring training ACL injury requiring surgery he did not play in 2023 and Philadelphia has since announced that Bryce Harper will be their everyday first baseman.
Despite missing all of last season Rhys Hoskins is still a very intriguing power option who has made noise in the post season. He belted 148 home runs over the last six years including a career .846 OPS and 125 OPS+ During the Phillies run to the World Series in 2022 he went deep five times in nine games throughout the NLDS and NLCS.
With coming off an injury that forced him to miss an entire season it is possible that his market doesn’t play out as expected. Teams may be hesitant to hand out a multi year contract and willing to wait to sign him until spring in hopes of getting him to commit to a one year prove it deal.
Spotrac currently has his estimated market value at $21 million. This is much higher than Milwaukee would be willing to spend, but if they could get him down into the $13-15 million guaranteed range then it would be more likely for a deal to get done.
