The Milwaukee Brewers wanted to acquire New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso this past MLB trade deadline, but their rivals, the Chicago Cubs, could very well be in on trading for him in the offseason. Alonso is about to enter the final year of his contract.
Mets new President of Baseball Operations David Stearns said on Monday in his opening press conference that he “expects” Alonso to be on the Opening Day roster in 2024, although plans can change for various reasons. According to various reports, the Chicago Cubs, the Milwaukee Brewers rival, are expected to make a push for Pete Alonso about a blockbuster trade this offseason.
Chicago Cubs reporter Bruce Levine said during an appearance on “Hit & Run with Matt Spiegel” on Monday:
“The mumbling out there is the Cubs are going to do everything they can to trade Pete Alonso from the Mets.”
ESPN’s Jesse Rogers also added comments on the Kap & J. Hood Show confirming those reports and even speculated that Alonso wants to join the Cubs. Rogers said:
“He has surveyed the big-market contending teams and saw that the Cubs don’t have any first baseman. They have a pretty good team and a great market, so I think he wants to come here as much as they want him.”
The Milwaukee Brewers Would Strike Out if Pete Alonso Was Traded to the Chicago Cubs
Milwaukee won the National League Central division this season with a 92-70 record. The Chicago Cubs struggled down the stretch and just missed the postseason with an 83-79 record. Chicago was nine games back of Milwaukee in the National League Central standings. The Cubs feel like they are another bat or two away from contending in the National League again.
Cody Bellinger and Dansby Swanson were two of their key players this season. Pete Alonso could be another huge addition to the Cubs lineup moving forward. If Chicago is going to trade for him, they better sign him to a long-term contract extension.
Alonso has been with the Mets for his entire career so far since 2019 and is 28 years old. In 154 games played this season, he only had a .217 batting average but had 46 home runs and 118 RBIs, along with four stolen bases and one caught stealing attempt.
If New York trades Alonso, it means that they are rebuilding for the long haul, and the Cubs are trying to go for it in 2024 and beyond. If the Milwaukee Brewers miss out on trading for him and land with their rival, the Chicago Cubs, it would be a huge swing and a miss.
