The Milwaukee Brewers have many questions that still have yet to be answered this offseason. One of them is in regards to their starting rotation. So far, they have non-tendered Colin Rea, decline Frankie Montas‘ $20 million player option (he has since signed with the New York Mets), and saw Joe Ross sign with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Furthermore, Milwaukee is not certain that two-time All-Star and Cy Young candidate Brandon Woodruff will be ready for the start of the 2025 regular season. Robert Gasser, who dazzled in his five starts before needing Tommy John surgery, will not be ready to rejoin the rotation until August.
As it stands, the Brewers have Freddie Peralta, Tobias Myers, Nestor Cortes, and Aaron Civale slated to make up their starting rotation. They also have Aaron Ashby, DL Hall, and Grant Wolfram who can also start.
But if the 2024 season taught them anything, it is that they cannot have too many starting pitchers. Last year, they used 17 different pitchers as starters or openers.
The Milwaukee Brewers Could Try to Fix Left-Handed Pitcher Patrick Corbin
The Brewers need starting pitching depth and former Washington Nationals left-handed starter Patrick Corbin, a two-time All-Star, needs a new team that can hopefully help him turn his career around.
Corbin just ended a six-year stint with the Nationals after signing a $140 million contract with them in 2019. To be frank, he was not worth it. In those six seasons, Corbin was just 47-77 with a 5.11 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.
He led the league in losses three times, hits allowed three times, earned runs allowed three times, and home runs given up once.
Last season, Corbin was 6-13 with a 5.62 ERA and 1.50 WHIP, which surprisingly was far from his worst season in Washington.
Spotrac has his market value in free agency set at $6.2 million, a price the cost-conscious Brewers could certainly afford.
The Milwaukee Brewers Pitching Lab Has Saved Careers
Obviously, a pitcher that has failed to finish a season with an ERA under 5.00 since 2020 is not what many fans would consider an ideal free agent target. That being said, if there is anything that can be fixed in Corbin’s delivery or mechanics, the Brewers are the team to fix it.
Their legendary pitching lab has done wonders for many free agent pitchers over the years. It is a secret lab in Arizona with all the best technology and analytical tools that help them diagnosis issues a pitcher has and then how to fix them.
Below are some examples of recent Brewers pitchers, their ERA prior to joining Milwaukee, and their ERA after visiting the pitching lab:
- Joe Ross: career 4.26 ERA before Milwaukee; 3.77 ERA with Milwaukee
- Colin Rea: career 4.79 ERA before Milwaukee; career-best 4.29 ERA in 2024 with the Brewers
- Frankie Montas: 5.01 ERA before trade to the Brewers; 4.55 ERA after
- Aaron Civale: 5.07 ERA before trade to the Brewers; 3.53 ERA after
- Jared Koenig: 5.72 ERA in first Majors stint with Oakland in 2022; 2.47 ERA for the Brewers in 2024
- Bryan Hudson: 7.27 ERA for the Dodgers in 2023; 1.73 ERA for the Brewers in 2024
- Bryse Wilson: 5.54 ERA with Braves and Pirates from 2018-22; 3.42 ERA in two seasons with Milwaukee
Of course, Milwaukee cannot fix everyone. But if there is something that can be fixed, they will. If Corbin wants to resurrect his career, the Brewers can give him the best shot at doing so.
