The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-3 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon to improve to 35-23 on the season. They now hold a six-and-a-half game lead over the Chicago Cubs for the top spot in the National League Central Division. The St. Louis Cardinals are seven games back; the Pittsburgh Pirates are eight games back; and the Cincinnati Reds are 10 games back.
The win was Milwaukee’s fourth in a row while it was Chicago’s 10th consecutive loss. Once again, the Brewers’ bats came alive against an opponent’s bullpen after being relatively held at bay by the opposing starter. They were only able to muster one run off of White Sox starter Garrett Crochet, who went five innings and struck out eight.
Willy Adames Tied and then Won the Game for the Milwaukee Brewers
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Adames hit a two-out two-RBI single that scored Brice Turang and William Contreras.
After reliever Hoby Milner was able to keep the White Sox off the board in the 10th inning, Adames came up to the plate with two runners on. After they advanced on a wild pitch, Adames hit a soft single to the hole at shortstop. Contreras scored from third base to give Milwaukee the 4-3 victory.
Adames had three RBI on the night, bringing his season total to 42.
Milwaukee Brewers Shortstop Willy Adames Reached a Career Milestone
The first run that scored on Adames’ single in the seventh inning was his 400th career RBI. In what is right now the equivalent of three full seasons in Milwaukee, Adames has driven in 278 runs.
This is likely going to the the fan-favorite shortstop’s last season with the Brewers, however. He is currently hitting .259/.336/.452 with nine home runs and 42 RBI. At the end of the season, he will become a free agent and is sure to have multiple lucrative offers from bigger markets.
In a recent interview, Brewers owner Mark Attanasio revealed that they did have contract extension talks with Adames over the offseason, but that they were unable to come to an agreement.
He also revealed that the organization had received multiple trade offers for the star shortstop, but they declined them all because the returns could not match the value that Adames brings to the team, and not just as a player, but as a person.
