The Milwaukee Brewers have been mentioned in a way too early free agent signings article post 2023 trade deadline. This article, written by Zachary D. Rymer, lists corner infielder Jeimer Candelario signing with the Brew Crew during the upcoming offseason.
Jeimer Candelario was just traded to the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline, but will be a free agent at seasons end. He was a popular trade target among many fan bases and should gain significant interest once the season is over.
Milwaukee Brewers predicted to sign third baseman/first baseman Jeimer Candelario in free agency.
3B/1B Jeimer Candelario: Milwaukee Brewers
Current Team: Chicago Cubs
Age: 29
2023 Stats: 106 G, 448 PA, 17 HR, 7 SB, .272 AVG, .356 OBP, .499 SLG
The Brewers rank among MLB’s dregs with the rWAR they’ve gotten from third and first base, so it will make sense for them to get someone who can handle both corners. As to actually signing Candelario, it’ll help that they have a fair deal of salary about to come off their books.
Contract: 4 Years, $60 Million
This season the Brewers have used a multiple person approach at third and first base including but not limited to Rowdy Tellez, Carlos Santana, Mark Canha, Jon Singleton, Darin Ruf, Owen Miller, Andruw Monasterio, Brian Anderson, Luis Urias, Mike Brosseau. and Abraham Toro. Of these mentioned just Tellez, Miller, Monasterio, and Toro may be around in 2024.
Given the amount of players used and inconsistent production so far, it makes some sense that Milwaukee could target a corner infielder like Jeimer Candelario in free agency. However a four year contract worth $60 million is not a deal we have seen them hand out in recent years. More realistically they would look to sign a veteran on a one year prove it deal for if that player under produced they could then turn to top prospect like Tyler Black who also plays the corners defensively.
