The Milwaukee Brewers are coming off of their first sweep at the hands of an opponent of the 2024 MLB season. However, they are still 36-26 and in first place of the National League Central Division. The Chicago Cubs are five-and-a-half games back, the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals are six-and-a-half back, and the Pittsburgh Pirates are seven games back.
While losing three straight games to the Philadelphia Phillies was far from ideal, no one can say they lost because of their pitching. Indeed, Brewers pitchers held an overpowering Phillies offense to just seven runs in three games. Had the bats not gone cold, they may have been able to pull out a victory or two.
The fact that Milwaukee’s pitching has been this good is really astounding considering how many injuries their pitchers have suffered, especially their starting rotation. As of this writing, the Brewers have five different starting pitchers from the 2024 season on the injured list: Robert Gasser, Joe Ross, Jakob Junis, DL Hall, and Wade Miley.
Because of all of their injuries, Milwaukee has had to rely heavily on their bullpen. As they prepare for their three-game weekend series on the road against the Detroit Tigers, they made the decision to call up another arm.
The Milwaukee Brewers Called Up James Meeker from Triple-A Nashville
Earlier this afternoon, the Brewers posted on social media that they had sent left-handed starting pitcher Aaron Ashby down to Triple-A Nashville. Ashby pitched on Wednesday, going five full innings while allowing two runs on two hits and five walks. He also struck out three.

As seen above, to take Ashby’s place on the roster, the Brewers called up right-handed relief pitcher James Meeker. A former shortstop and third baseman, Meeker is 1-0 with a 2.67 ERA this season. He pitched four games for the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers before being promoted to the Nashville Sounds.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ Bullpen Options vs the Detroit Tigers
Rookie right-handed pitcher Tobias Myers is slated to start the opener of the series against Detroit. It is almost assuredly going to be a big day for the bullpen as Myers has not made it five full innings since his second Big League start earlier this year.
The pitchers available on Friday are:
- Joel Payamps
- Trevor Megill
- Hoby Milner
- Elvis Peguero
- Byran Hudson
- Kevin Herget
- Enoli Paredes
- Jared Koenig
- James Meeker
